Guitar Greatness

The other night, while enjoying an afternoon White Russian at the Ritz lounge, I started chatting with a fellow guest. He was a really talkative guy and far from the pompous sort filling the room. It turned out that I had bumped into Bruce Mays. Somewhat notable for being the nephew of baseball legend Willy Mays, Bruce is better known as being one of the greatest unknown drummers of the last thirty years. He backs up George Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars. But, it blew my mind when he told me he was sitting in for the late John Bonham on the Led Zeppelin reunion tour.

I chilled out with the man that will be performing with Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones. That was pretty sweet.

To me, at least.

So, in honor of that random experience and Bruce (who swears he'll call me when the tour swings West), I thought I'd contentiously present the top ten guitar acts of all time. The criteria are entirely my subjective perception of their complexity and intensity. Artists are limited to one appearance.

Top Ten Guitar Tracks of All Time

10. Texas Flood, Stevie Ray Vaughan

9. Crazy Train, Randy Rhoads

8. Bohemian Rhapsody, Brian May

7. Comfortably Numb, David Gilmour

6. Sweet Child O' Mine, Slash

5. Freebird, Allen Collins

4. Layla, Eric Clapton

3. Thunderstruck, Angus Young

2. Stairway, Jimmy Page

1. All Along The Watchtower, Jimi Hendrix

Bruce Mays is a grifter that is known to many for his ability to talk people with money or power into crazy stuff. I've seen him run into rockers as they are coming out of a venue sell his book of goods then take them to a bar. Next thing you know Bruce is getting free beers and a whole bar of people know know him as that guy who brought in some rockers. So he must be legit? I actually have a lot of rescpect for him and he is mostly harmless, unless he is wasted drunk and coked up.

Ditto Anonymous. Grifter may be a perfect word to describe him. Along with INSANE. I've known Bruce Mays for quite some time and his lies have grown greater over the years. I do not argue that he is a actual musician. As for his touring with Led Zepplin, being the baseball great's nephew, and his latest, being Alan Iverson's father (I kid you not), he is living in a fantasy world. Yes a grifter, but I also believe that he actually thinks his fantasies are reality. So YLS3L, I hate to have to tell you that your new buddy has done nothing but try to con you for a few drinks that he can't afford. Don't worry though, Bruce Mays has been doing this for as long as I've known him. As far as I know he has burned his bridges in just about every watering hole in Philadelphia. Flagged from most!!!

BRUCE MAYS... Ha Ha I have known Bruce for 2 years. In the beginning I believed the hype, just a poor rocker has-been-never-was. It's funny, the date on this blog is 2005, Bruce told me the same story this past summer in 2007, going on tour with Led Zepplin and I wouldn't see him around for a while (thank God). He didn't come around, however I did see him at another bar, just hid from him so he wouldn't talk to me. Then 5 minutes later, was escorted out again. He is known through Philly as the guy who takes tips off the bar and buy himself drinks. Stay away, he is trouble!

I have known Bruce since high school. That is until he was thrown out for hitting a teacher. He lies about everything (Willie Mays, Led Zepplin Reunion Tour - OMG! LOL!) and loves to pretend he has legit connections. What he does have is a knack for hanging around the music scene like a cheap groupie and inserting himself near well known people for a photo op. He is the only person I have ever known who had a high opinion of himself. In other words, he a legend in his own mind!

I'm from Romania on a holiday here in the states. I met the guy at the Greyhound. He was nice enough to stick up for me against a man who wouldn't leave me alone. But he wouldn't leave me alone and insisted he stay with me until it was time for me to leave. He would not be quiet. He is very abrasive and rude to people. I may avoid coming to Philadelphia just so I don't see him again.
